Funke Agbor, SAN

Funke Agbor, SAN is a Partner Emeritus at Dentons ACAS-Law, specializing in Dispute Resolution. She is an extremely skilled litigator with 40 years' experience, highly touted for her expertise in maritime law and litigation, and known for her measured and calm approach to achieving the best commercial outcomes for her clients.

Funke has acted in complex, sensitive, and commercial disputes across a broad range of sectors, including financial services, labour and employment, real estate, oil and gas, general and marine insurance, offshore contracting, shipping and admiralty, international trade, and port concessioning. Notable matters include representing a multi‑national oil exploration company in a multi‑billion dollar oil spill litigation that progressed to the appellate courts; representing one of the first independent power projects in Nigeria in a claim against the Federal Republic of Nigeria; representing an international company operating a major Nigerian port in a tax claim of over N1.8 billion (over US$12 million); representing a major international airline in civil litigation claims; representing a US‑based internet‑service provider in the recovery of unpaid fees in excess of US$9 million; and representing ship owners and FPSO owners in maritime and cabotage matters. She has also represented a major international brewery in enforcing its contractual rights, and has acted as counsel in a number of arbitrations as well as a mediator.

Funke holds an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Lagos (1981), a B.L. from the Nigerian Law School (1982), and an LL.M from University College London (1984). She was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1982, appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2016, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK and Nigeria Branch) and a CEDR Accredited Mediator.

Funke has been consistently recognised in leading legal directories: named to the Hall of Fame in Shipping and Transport by The Legal 500 (2020, 2021, 2024), ranked in Band 2 in Dispute Resolution by Chambers Global Guide (2012–2023), and named a Global Leader in Transport (Shipping) by Who's Who Legal. She serves as President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association and has written and presented extensively on maritime law and arbitration.
