Chisa Theodora Uba

Chisa Theodora Uba is a Partner in the Lagos office of Dentons ACAS‑Law, where she heads the Shipping and International Trade unit, specialising in maritime law, shipping and international trade, and maritime dispute resolution. She advises clients on Nigerian shipping laws, international maritime conventions, ship finance, shipbuilding contracts, charterparties, and the carriage of goods.

Chisa advises vessel operators on compliance with local content laws, particularly the Nigerian Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003 and the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act 2010. She was one of the lead counsel in the group that successfully prosecuted the first landmark case under the Cabotage Act, and regularly advises clients on compliance matters and viable corporate structures for shipping companies. She also represents clients before government agencies, committees of the Nigerian National Assembly, and in maritime litigation before Nigerian courts, including admiralty actions in rem.

Chisa holds an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Benin (1997) and a BL from the Nigerian Law School (1999). She is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

She has been consecutively listed as a leading lawyer in Nigeria for shipping and maritime by Who's Who Legal since 2016, and regularly contributes to publications including Getting the Deal Through and Lexology.
